Rest

There’s something about an extra day of rest for my heart. Sabbath flows naturally with how I want to live throughout the week. But the extra day? That’s extravagant.

He’s so extravagant.

I don’t know about you, but I struggle with not earning blessings. We’ve been showered lately, and I’ve said more than once to hubs, “I don’t deserve all this.”

Of course not.

Of course not.

368

Oh, things are far from perfect around here, just like in your corner of the world. We have our struggles. Our slow-to-learn lessons. Our outright rebellions from which we reap consequences.

And still, extravagance. Extravagant love, extravagant forgiveness.

Extravagant hope.

I hope you delight in the freedom this Labor Day. Create something beautiful. Forgive someone generously. Receive forgiveness humbly.

Love the people in front of you.

Freely you have received; freely give.

Sacred

When these things had been done, the Jewish leaders came to me and said,

“Many of the people of Israel, and even some of the priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the other peoples living in the land. They have taken up the detestable practices of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites. For the men of Israel have married women from these people and have taken them as wives for their sons. So the holy race has become polluted by these mixed marriages. Worse yet, the leaders and officials have led the way in this outrage.”

When I heard this, I tore my cloak and my shirt, pulled hair from my head and beard, and sat down utterly shocked. Then all who trembled at the words of the God of Israel came and sat with me because of this outrage committed by the returned exiles. And I sat there utterly appalled until the time of the evening sacrifice.

Ezra 9:1-4

328

Let’s take a deep breath. This can come across at first glance as harsh and unreasonable. So let’s back up.

Way back when God rescued His people out of Egypt, He brought them to the Promised Land. Other peoples lived there, too, and because His people were badal – set apart – He warned them not to adopt the practices and worship of the peoples around. Remember, not because He’s mean but for their own good and to show other nations His character. That they would see His worth and be drawn to Him.

Unfortunately, they did not listen. Many of the Israelites married foreign women and added the worship of their foreign gods to the worship of Yahweh. This does not work. It never will.

Our God is the Great I AM. There is no room for worship of any other.

307

After several generations of disobeying God, we know His people were taken captive by foreign kings, lost their nation and law and Temple, and were exiled away from Jerusalem.

And, as we’ve been studying, God in His hesed – loving kindness and loyalty – orchestrated miracles in bringing that first generation of exiles back to Jerusalem.

Back home.

When Ezra, the scribe, well-versed in the beautiful Law of Moses, finally shows up on the scene, what does he hear?

The people have not kept themselves qodesh – sacred. They have taken up disgusting practices. The Hebrew gives the image of a mortgage. Refusing to be set apart, they have mortgaged themselves with the peoples around. And the leaders are first in this treachery.

Now we can breathe. Ezra is not overreacting.

He is grieving.

full115

By marrying people who do not know Him, God’s people were on the fast track to idolatry.

Now we might need to take a breath for another reason. Suppose you’re a wife like me and you’ve had a week like mine: one where your husband was just as likely to show up as a hero as he was for you to say to him, “I can see why God said your gender needed a helper.”

Hypothetically.

Should we panic? Conclude our men don’t know God? Tear our clothes and pull out our hair?

No. Especially if we know they know God. We should probably give grace. And remember all the ways God has rescued and forgiven us. And keep in mind when we are united in His eyes, we are one flesh. And He takes that marriage relationship very personally.

336

But Ezra, new on the scene and hearing this idolatry from people just rescued from exile?

He’s going to sit down astonished – stunned, appalled, devastated.

And not only him, but all who chared – tremble – at the words of the God of Israel.

It is times like these I am so grateful for the New Covenant. When Jesus came, He took on the people of God’s failure to accurately represent Him. He represented Him perfectly. Then died for everyone who failed to.

This God-Man not only loved, but walked up to, engaged, and served a Samaritan woman – a woman of mixed race and worship – and declared the gospel to her.

FullSizeRender (10)

He is the God Who sees all the way down to our hearts and loves us right where we are, no strings attached. Then, He asks us to cooperate with Him as He does not leave us where we are, but makes us more and more qodesh.

Set apart as sacred.

That others may see His worth and be drawn to Him.

*Please know I am talking about marriage where in which no abuse is taking place. If you are being abused, please, please seek help.*

Check In

We are in our New Normal.

This is the first full week of school for all of us. Youngest is in all-day Kindergarten, oldest is in 3rd, and so is Hubs. I am incredibly blessed to spend my afternoons at the boys’ school helping with reading and math groups.

And in the meantime?

I write.

292

Some things I’m excited about living through/writing about:

  1. Racial reconciliation. God will not let up on this in my personal life, which often translates to sharing on here.
  2. Essential Oils. So happy to officially be at this party. Learning lots, seeing some results already, excited to learn from others out there.
  3. House stuff. Hubs has several projects in the works and it is fun to see different things come together. And not just for the pretty factor, but intentionality in finances.
  4. Gifting. Been adoring Mason Jars and flowers and extra books and taking things we already have to bless others.
  5. 100 Dreams list. It really is a chore to get one hundred. But I love it’s not a to-do list, but something to keep returning to to make sure our daily lives are lining up with big-picture goals. Like a mission statement.
  6. Blessing Bags – and how to build them on a budget
  7. Oil Pulling – still a new thing for me but becoming a habit.
  8. More crafting/creating. Saw this Instagram post on Twitter and it inspired me to get to creating as I write. Those two things don’t have to be separated in my life.

How are you? I’d love to hear anything you’re learning!

Protected and Lifted

“We broke camp at the Ahava Canal on April 19 and started off to Jerusalem. And the gracious hand of our God protected us and saved us from enemies and bandits along the way. So we arrived safely in Jerusalem, where we rested for three days.

On the fourth day after our arrival, the silver, gold, and other valuables were weighed at the Temple of our God and entrusted to Meremoth son of Uriah the priest and to Eleazar son of Phinehas, along with Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui – both of whom were Levites. Everything was accounted for by number and weight, and the total weight was officially recorded.

329

Then the exiles who had come out of captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel. They presented twelve bulls for all the people of Israel, as well as ninety-six rams and seventy-seven male lambs. They also offered twelve male goats as a sin offering. All this was given as a burnt offering to the LORD. The king’s decrees were delivered to his highest officers and the governors of the province west of the Euphrates River, who then cooperated by supporting the people and the Temple of God.

Ezra 8:31-36 NLT

Well, this group made it, too. Once again, the gap in the narrative makes me curious about their journey: did they argue? Did they play games to pass the time? Did anyone get sick? I’m sure they sang. I bet the children got antsy. I can only imagine how all the animals smelled.

324

But they made it. Because “the gracious hand of [their] God protected [them].”

And Ezra is pretty specific from whom God protected the caravan: enemies and bandits.

The Hebrew for protected is natsal – to snatch away. I have a person in my life regularly reminding me that there is only one enemy in my situation. And it is not another person. It is the one who seeks to kill, steal, and destroy.

IMG_0964

Can I tell you how grateful I am to have a God Who will snatch me away from that enemy? From that bandit (arab) who lurks around looking for opportunities to destroy?

If you are His precious child, that is how He is working in your life as well. Snatching you away from the evil one. Only giving him just enough leash to accomplish in your life what He allows and desires. Using everything that bandit means for evil to work for good in your life. Because if our awesome God made sure that physical treasure of gold and silver made it safely on their way, you can rest assured He will take care of His little flock on ours.

sheep-1246204_1920

The next sentence is so beautiful: “Then the exiles who had come out of captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel.”

287

How long had it been? This generation had never been able to offer a proper offering for their sin in Temple. These exiles, shbiy– prisoners – finally getting to worship God for accepting a chatta’ah – a penalty for the death they deserved.

How grateful they must have been.

sheep-1506264_1280

And it gets even better: the king’s decrees were given to all his officials and they, too, “cooperated by supporting the people and the Temple of God.”

That word support is nasah – to lift. The non-Jewish king and his officials lifted, furthered, supported the people and the House of God.

God will use Who He will to lift high His name and His people.

full234

The beautiful news is when they see Him lifted up, many will bow down.
